Making a case for a Sex Offenders List in Nigeria.

Does Nigeria need a Sex Offenders List?

Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable members of the society, any serious government should go to extra length to protect them and look out for them. In some societies worthy of emulation, we have organisations with different names all performing basically the same role, for example we have Disclosure and Barring Service (UK), Garda Check (Ireland), and similar organisations like Certified Background.com (US)  also Violence and Sex Offenders List/Registry etc.

It is high time Nigeria look into this issue with the seriousness that it deserves. The issue that has brought this matter to the fore in recent time is the Queens College/Osifala saga. I will not bore you by repeating the details as plastered all over social media. Thanks to the power of Social Media, the authorities have now been made aware, but what is being treated so far if you ask me, are the symptoms, not the illness, the illness is still very much alive, kicking and undisturbed. Structures must be put in place to tackle this menace, every individual that will be working with children must be subjected to annual character and conduct check, all cases involving abuse, harrassment in any form must be reported, prosecuted and sanctioned in line with legal provisions, any person found guilty must not only be named and shamed, but also be  banned and prevented from having access to children ever again.

I have gone a step further to set up a petition at change.org. So if you are a lover of children and you want to put your signature and your mouth where your love is, please go on and sign the petition.

Are our local languages going extinct?

This is one sin every Nigerian parent is guilty of. In a bid to make sure our children get their English langauge right from scratch, we speak English with them from the very beginning. Those of us that speak both English and our native langauge are far outnumbered and the result we get from this effort  is also barely noticeable. Our consolation is that when they get older, they will catch up on other local languages and be able to speak it even if it will not be  as good as they  speak English.Talking about langauges, Nigerian children have a unique ability to speak one local langauge in another accent, my children for example speak the little Yoruba they know in Igbo.

Usually when we have our daily devotion, we start with a minimum of ten worship songs to set the right mood and transport us into that attitude of praise and gratitude. The Yoruba songs in Igbo accent as sung by my children are beautiful to hear and I’m sure Baba God will be chuckling as He listens, I’m sure He will be saying, these my children have come again this morning.

When I wanted to raise things up a notch one Saturday morning, I announced that we will now pray in Yoruba, come and see gobe

Haitian-child-praying-450x300 loving-shepherd.org

Ni oruko Jesu….

, we started with T2

T2: Ni oruko Jesu, Baba wa….. Adupe, in Jesus name we pray.

All of us: Amin

T3: Mummy, what is a dupe?

Me: We thank you.

T3: Okay, a dupe Baba…

Me: Oya, continue now.

T3: Mummy this is not fair, let everybody pray in their own langauge.

Me: Ehn en, so English is now your own langauge abi? Okay T1, oya.

T1: Ni oruko Jesu, e se Baba, ti e fun wa ni iya wa, ati baba wa, e se fun gbogbo ebi wa, ni Nigeria ati ni everywhere. Ese aji leni. In Jesus name, Ni oruko Jesu.

All of us: Amin.

I capped everything up with intense prayers in Yoruba for another ten or so minutes.

Now is n’t that a wonderful way to start a beautiful morning? Verily verily, I assure you, Baba God will answer those prayers said in Yoruba with an Igbo accent. You give it a trial and let me know. He will forgive us our sins for turning English into our children’s first langauge instead of their ‘native tongue’ in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

That our local languages are going extinct is sadly a an unhappy reality, we should all make effort to arrest this trend in our own little way by speaking our langauge to our children, at least one benefit to be derived is that you can converse with your children in public without people knowing what you are talking about.

Mothers, chop knuckle, Happy Mother’s Day. God Himself is a mother.

chop knuckle2

Chop knuckle!

To all those beautiful mothers, chop knuckle jare, its another Mother’s Day, it’s your day, it’s one of the days every hardworking and competent mother should be basking in joy and grinning from ear to ear. Do you know that God Himself is a mother? Yes, that’s how important the role is. So if you are at that stage of your life when you feel you have not been able to put things together or you don’t seem to have a clue about what parenting is, that’s okay,it happens to the best of us, so relax, it’s not the end of the world, trust me, everything is going to be alright.

God appreciates us and tells us in Isa 66:13 that “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you. He knows that ‘Comfort’ is our middle name, we are all naturally wired to comfort our child. He also wants to know in 49:15  “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I [God] will not forget you.” So from these verses, God that put you in that position knows what you are going through. He knows the many roles and duties you perform. He knows you will deprive yourself so as to give your child the best, in Matthew 7: 9-10, He asks, “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? So He will provide for you to be able to fulfil your role.

He knows you protect your child and that you would dare anything or anybody that wants to harm or even disturb the peace, security and progress of your child especially after your patience has been tried so much, He says in Isaiah 42:14, “For a very long time, I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in child birth, I cry out, I gasp, I pant. But please proceed with caution biko, on your way to waging a war against that your child’s enemy, note enemy here could even be self inflicted like procrastination, laziness etc.

Trust me, He kuku knows that you put your child  first before anything and anybody, in Luke 11:5-9 a friend wanted to borrow some food items at the dead of the night,  “….. the mother asnswers, don’t bother me. The door is locked for the night and my family and I are all in bed. I can’t help you. He knows about discipline, He disciplines us afterall and so encourages you to discipline your child too. So in Hebrews 12:6 we learn that “The Lord disciplines the one He loves and chastises every son whom he receives.

God being a mother Himself has commanded your child to honour you in Ephesians 6:2 He says ” Honour your father and your mother (this is the first commandment with a promise). He also tells your child in Proverbs 6:20 not to forsake your teaching because He knows you can deliver, He trusts you with His creation and believes in ‘your teaching’. Listen, He gives you greater responsibility than He gives the father in the upbrining of your child because He knows your capacity so in Proverbs 10:1 He says ” A wise son makes a glad father , but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother” Note that God did not say sorrow to his father.

And finally if you are still in doubt, He assures you in Joshua 1:9 and commands you to”Be strong and be of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed; for I the Lord your God am with you wherever you go”. And remember no matter how long it will take there will be reversal of role, so may you reap all the fruits of your parenting labour , Amen.

mothers day 3

Role reversal, Naiajamum and her mum, can you guess the conversation?

So what plans have you got today? No plans yet? No problem, chop knuckle, its your day, have it your way, you are allowed to go off duty for today (partially o, not fully) only and do whatever makes you happy. Happy Mother’s Day.
